Dr. Jyotiranjan Gudia Speaks on Suicide Prevention on World Suicide Prevention Day at Government Degree College, Chitrakonda

“Creating Hope Through Action”

On 10 September 2026, Government Degree College, Chitrakonda, Malkangiri, observed World Suicide Prevention Day with the participation of students from +3 First Year to Third Year.
On this important occasion, I, Dr. Jyotiranjan Gudia, was invited as a speaker to address the students on the theme of suicide prevention and mental well-being**. I briefly discussed the importance of recognising emotional distress, seeking timely help, supporting friends and classmates, and creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their problems.

I emphasised that asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign of courage. Academic pressure, family difficulties, relationship problems, financial concerns, loneliness and uncertainty about the future can sometimes make young people feel overwhelmed. In such situations, talking to a trusted person, teacher, counsellor, family member or mental-health professional can make an important difference.

I also encouraged the students to be attentive to their friends and classmates. Sometimes, a simple conversation, patient listening and showing genuine concern can provide much-needed emotional support. We should never ignore someone who appears deeply distressed or isolated. Our respected Principal, Dr. Chinmay Kumar Behera, also shared valuable examples and real-life incidents during the programme to motivate the students and highlight the importance of hope, resilience and seeking support during difficult moments.

The programme reminded us that suicide prevention is not the responsibility of one individual or institution. It is a collective responsibility of families, educational institutions, communities and society as a whole.

Let us create a culture where people can speak openly about their struggles, seek help without fear or shame, and know that they are not alone.
Let us create hope through action, compassion and understanding. Every life matters. Every conversation can make a difference.
