Among the primitive tribal groups living in Malkangiri district, the Didayi tribe is one of the most distinct. From this community, Jyotiranjan Gudia has become the first youth to earn a Doctorate degree. He is the son of Buda Gudia and Radha Gudia, residents of Muduliguda village under Rasabeda Panchayat in Khairaput block. Buda Gudia is a poor farmer. Jyotiranjan completed his primary and upper primary education at Kudumulugumma. Although he had a strong desire to study, financial hardship in his family made it very difficult. From Class VIII to X, he stayed and studied under the guidance of teacher Maheswar Maharana, who recognized his artistic talent and believed he could become a skilled painter in the future. Mr. Maharana supported him by connecting him with different organizations and providing him opportunities for art training. After passing Class X, Jyotiranjan got the opportunity to continue his studies in Bhubaneswar. At the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), he completed +2, graduation, post-graduation, M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees. Through his thesis on the “Continuity and Changes in the Traditional Political System of the Didayi Tribe,” Jyotiranjan earned his Doctorate, becoming the first educated youth from the Didayi community to achieve this distinction.

Malkangiri, 16/10 (Satyanarayan Dash): For the first time, a young man from the primitive Didayi tribe of Malkangiri district, Jyotiranjan Gudia, has been awarded a Doctorate degree. Hailing from Muduliguda village, surrounded by dense forests under Rasbeda Panchayat in Khairaput block, Jyotiranjan is a talented and hardworking youth from a poor tribal family. His father, Buda Gudia, and mother, Radha Gudia, sustain their family through farming and daily wage labor. Despite severe financial hardship, Jyotiranjan pursued his education with great dedication. During his free time, he painted beautiful pictures and sold them to earn money to support his family. Witnessing his parents’ struggles from a young age, he was determined to study hard and become part of the mainstream society. He completed his primary education in Kudumulugumma and later enrolled in the Government High School of the same area. Though poverty made his journey difficult, his intelligence and talent shone brightly like the fragrance of basil leaves. From classes 8 to 10, he stayed with Maheswar Maharana Sir, who was impressed by his remarkable artistic skills. The teacher helped him connect with different organizations and provided him with opportunities to further develop his art. In 2012, Jyotiranjan passed his matriculation examination from Kudumulugumma High School and then moved to Bhubaneswar for higher studies. From that day, he never looked back. He excelled not only in art but also in academics. At the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), Bhubaneswar, he completed his +2 Arts, B.A. in Political Science, M.A., M.Phil., and finally Ph.D. He became the first Didayi tribal youth to earn a Doctorate degree.

His Ph.D. thesis was titled “Continuity and Changes of the Traditional Political System of the Didayi Tribe in Odisha: A Case Study of Malkangiri District.” The news of a poor young man from the Didayi tribe earning a Doctorate has brought immense joy to his native Muduliguda village under Rasbeda Panchayat. Villagers celebrated the achievement with traditional dance and music. People across the district have expressed deep admiration and extended their best wishes for Jyotiranjan’s continued success and bright future.

The first youth from the Didayi tribal community of Malkangiri district, Jyotiranjan Gudia, has been honored with a Doctorate degree. Jyotiranjan, a native of Muduliguda village under Rasbeda Panchayat in Khairaput Block, pursued his higher education at an educational institution in Bhubaneswar. He earned this distinction through his research on his own community.His dissertation, titled “Continuity and Changes in the Traditional Political System of the Didayi Tribe and Its Present Context,” has been highly appreciated by scholars and intellectual circles. The news of his achievement has brought immense pride and happiness to his native village. Jyotiranjan said that he turned every adverse situation into an opportunity, which helped him achieve this success.

Jyotiranjan is a bright young man from the Didayi tribe. His father, Buda Gudia, and mother, Radha Gudia, sustain their family through farming and daily wage labor. Despite the family’s poor financial condition, Jyotiranjan studied with determination and dedication. A talented artist, he used to create paintings and sell them to earn some money to support his family.From a young age, seeing his parents’ struggles, he resolved to become a good human being through education. He completed his primary schooling in Kudumulugumma and then enrolled at the local government high school. Despite financial hardship and social challenges, he continued his education with strong willpower and perseverance. In 2012, he passed the matriculation examination from Kudumulugumma High School, and later joined an institution in Bhubaneswar, where he completed his +2, graduation, post-graduation, and finally qualified for the Ph.D. program.

The residents of Muduliguda village under Rasbeda Panchayat in Khairaput block organized a grand welcome ceremony for Dr. Jyotiranjan Gudia, the pride and glory of the region, who recently earned his Doctorate degree. The villagers celebrated the return of their beloved son, Dr. Jyoti, who is regarded as the shining light of the Didayi tribal community. Accompanied by his father, Buda Gudia, his sister, and hundreds of villagers, he was welcomed with traditional rituals sandal paste, garlands, music, and fireworks before being taken in a procession to Nuaguda village. The event was attended by Khairaput Block Chairman Bighnaraj Kirshani, Didayi Community President Bansidhar Muduli, Zilla Parishad Member Bali Majhi, Sarpanch Mangala Madhi, teacher Umashankar Das, community leaders Sadhu Hantal, Bhagaban Sahu, and Lakshmidhar Majhi, among others. It is worth mentioning that Dr. Gudia comes from a Scheduled Tribe background. Despite belonging to a very poor family, his deep interest in education led him to pursue higher studies at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) University, Bhubaneswar. In his remarks, Dr. Jyoti said that in the coming days, he will continue to work for the educational upliftment of Didayi youth and strive to bring them into the mainstream of society.

        Dr. Jyotiranjan Gudia’s academic journey from a small tribal village in Malkangiri to achieving a Doctorate Degree at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar, stands as an inspiring story of dedication, perseverance and purpose. Belonging to the Didayi tribe, one of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) of India, Dr. Gudia’s path was not an easy one. However, his determination to study the roots of his community’s governance system and bring its story to the academic world kept him moving forward. His Ph.D. thesis titled “Continuity and Changes of Traditional Political System of the Didayi Tribe in Odisha: A Case Study of Malkangiri District” reflects his deep connection with his people and his commitment to preserving their cultural and political heritage. The subject of his doctoral research holds great anthropological and social value. Through years of extensive fieldwork, observation and interviews in several Didayi villages, Dr. Gudia examined how traditional systems of leadership, such as the roles of Naik, Chalan, Dishari and Pujari, have evolved over time under the influence of modernization, government programs and external institutions. His research revealed how the Didayi tribe continues to uphold its collective decision-making practices and social harmony while adapting to changing times. This study not only documents an important aspect of tribal life but also provides valuable insights for policymakers and scholars who wish to understand the intersection of tradition and modern governance in tribal India.

        After successfully completing his Ph.D., Dr. Jyotiranjan Gudia returned to his native village, Muduliguda, on 26th October 2025. His homecoming was a moment of immense pride and emotion for his family, relatives and the entire Didayi community. The villagers, dressed in their best traditional attire, gathered to welcome him with garlands, flowers and warm smiles. His mother, Radha Gudia and other elders of the village walked alongside him, while his uncle respectfully held an umbrella above him a traditional gesture symbolizing honor and respect. For many, it was a historic day, as Dr. Gudia had become the first person from the Didayi (PVTG) community to earn a doctoral degree. The celebration extended beyond Muduliguda, as members of neighboring tribal communities such as the Bonda, Koya, Gadaba, Parenga, Gouda, Kandha and Bhumia societies also expressed their joy and admiration. His achievement represented a shared success for all tribal societies of southern Odisha. They viewed his educational accomplishment as a victory of indigenous perseverance, proving that education and tradition can coexist in harmony. Many young villagers saw Dr. Gudia’s success as a source of inspiration, a living example that education is a pathway to empowerment and community upliftment. In the photograph, Dr. Gudia is seen planting a sapling in Muduliguda village shortly after his arrival. This act symbolized growth, renewal and the deep connection between education and environmental responsibility. Surrounded by his villagers and elders, he planted the tree as a gesture of gratitude to his land and people. The plantation also served as a metaphor for the seeds of knowledge and awareness he has sown through his years of research. It was a simple yet powerful moment that captured the essence of his journey rooted in culture, nurtured by learning and committed to giving back to his community.

     On 26th October 2025, Dr. Jyotiranjan Gudia returned to his native village, Muduliguda, in Malkangiri district, after successfully completing his doctoral degree at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. His Ph.D. research was titled “Continuity and Changes of Traditional Political System of the Didayi Tribe in Odisha: A Case Study of Malkangiri District.” This work represents not only a milestone in his personal academic journey but also a landmark achievement for the Didayi community, one of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) of India. Through his research, Dr. Gudia explored how traditional governance systems among the Didayis have adapted to modern influences while retaining their cultural essence. When Dr. Gudia arrived at Muduliguda, he was greeted with immense pride and emotion by his villagers. The entire community came together to celebrate his homecoming, recognizing it as a historic moment for their village and tribe. Dressed in traditional and festive attire, people gathered with garlands, drums and songs to welcome their first doctorate holder. Dr. Gudia’s research holds deep cultural and academic significance. By studying the traditional political system of the Didayi tribe, he shed light on the values, leadership structures and collective decision-making processes that have sustained the tribe for generations. His work also documented how modernization, government interventions and external influences have brought about both continuity and change in their governance practices. The study not only contributes to the field of anthropology and tribal studies but also serves as a valuable resource for policymakers, scholars and organizations working for the preservation of tribal heritage and identity. The homecoming of Dr. Jyotiranjan Gudia was thus more than a personal celebration it was a moment of collective pride for the Didayi tribe and all indigenous societies of the region. His journey from a remote tribal village to earning a doctorate stands as a powerful message of hope, determination and cultural rootedness. I am Dr. Jyotiranjan Gudia, a proud member of the Didayi tribal community. My home is in Muduliguda village under Rasabeda Gram Panchayat, located in Khairaput Block of Malkangiri district, Odisha. My father’s name is Buda, my mother’s name is Radha and I have a younger sister named Menaka. Our family has always lived a simple life rooted in hard work and values. My father is a farmer who toils in the fields to support our family, while my mother contributes to the household income by collecting kendu leaves, gathering mahua flowers and working in other people’s houses. Her tireless efforts ensured that I could continue my education even in difficult times. At times, my father’s younger brothers and sisters my uncles and aunts, namely Jagannath Gudia, the late Tulasi Gudia, Rameshwara Gudia and the late Laxman Gudia would also lend their support by contributing small amounts of money to help with my schooling expenses. Growing up in such a modest environment taught me the value of perseverance, humility and the importance of education. It was my parents’ dream to see me study well and build a better life, not just for myself but also for our community.

Since my childhood, my father had a strong determination to give me a good education, something that was rare in our tribal community. With that dream in his heart, he enrolled me in a school at Kudumulugumma, a nearby village where I received my primary and secondary education. When I was in the fifth grade, my hidden talent for painting was discovered by Maheshwara Maharana Sir, one of my teachers who played a key role in shaping my creative journey. He encouraged me to pursue art seriously, provided me with paints and brushes and even arranged small paid assignments for me through his contacts at the Anganwadi Centre, Gram Panchayat and Block Office. His constant support gave me confidence and purpose at a young age. During that period, I also began learning traditional wedding and ritual paintings, as well as calligraphy, from a local artist named Sanjay from Kudumulugumma village. These early experiences not only developed my artistic skills but also deepened my connection with the cultural heritage of my community. After completing class seven, upon the request of Maharana Sir, the Headmaster of the primary school, Keshab Chandra Pradhan, allowed me to stay on the school premises for another three years so that I could continue my studies from class eight to ten. Their guidance, kindness and encouragement during those formative years became the foundation of my educational and artistic journey.

In 2012, I passed my matriculation examination a milestone that marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life. Pursuing higher education had always been a dream, especially given the financial hardships my family faced. Despite these challenges, I held onto hope and faith. I regularly prayed to Goddess Bhairabi of Purunagumma village, seeking her blessings for an opportunity to study at the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), Bhubaneswar. Through her divine grace and my parents’ unwavering support, I was admitted to KISS in 2012 to pursue +2 Arts. From that moment onward, I promised myself that I would never look back.



At KISS, I completed my +2 Arts between 2012 and 2014, earned my B.A. (Honours) in Political Science from 2014 to 2017 and went on to complete my M.A. in Political Science from 2017 to 2019. I then pursued my M.Phil. in Political Science between 2019 and 2021 and later, my Ph.D. from 2021 to 2025. These 13 years at KISS not only shaped my academic journey but also strengthened my values, discipline and commitment to serve my community. During my M.Phil., my research topic was “Socio-cultural Development of Didayi Tribe in Odisha: A Case Study on Malkangiri District.” I conducted this research under the supervision of Dr. Tusarkanta Pattnaik, whose constant guidance and encouragement helped me build a strong foundation for my future research. For my Ph.D., my research topic was “Continuity and Changes of Traditional Political System of Didayi Tribe in Odisha: A Case Study of Malkangiri District.” I carried out this study under the able supervision of Dr. Tusarkanta Pattnaik as my Research Guide and Dr. Ratnakar Mohapatra as my Co-guide. My Ph.D. Roll No. was 21193016 and Registration No. 20190170100003. To ensure academic rigor, the Department of Political Science at KISS appointed Prof. Jugal Kishore Mishra and Dr. Raj Kumar Khosla as members of my Research Scrutiny Committee (RSC). My thesis was examined by Dr. Pradip Kumar Parida, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, Jawaharlal Nehru University (CCPPT, SIS), New Delhi, who served as the External Examiner. My Ph.D. Viva Voce Examination was successfully held on 15 October 2025, in the presence of Prof. Brahmananda Satapathy, who attended as the Hon’ble VC Nominee of KISS Deemed to be University. That day was one of the most memorable and fulfilling moments of my life, as it marked the culmination of years of dedication, struggle and perseverance in my academic journey.

Between 2012 and 2025, I studied at KISS (Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences) completely free of cost. Alongside my academic education, I also refined my artistic skills through the institute’s vocational training programs. During this period, I actively participated in numerous painting competitions held across Odisha and proudly secured the state-level first prize three times. In 2016, on the occasion of Children’s Day, I had the opportunity to draw a live portrait of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, on Kalinga TV within just two minutes. The performance was widely appreciated and became a memorable moment in my artistic journey. In 2017, I again received recognition when I sketched Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday, also within two minutes, which earned appreciation from teachers, peers and media alike. These experiences not only strengthened my confidence as an artist but also inspired me to see art as a meaningful way to connect with people and express cultural identity.

Having studied at KISS for 14 long years, I feel proud and deeply grateful to have grown not only as a good human being but also as the first doctorate holder from the Didayi (PVTG) community. My Ph.D. research on the Continuity and Changes of the Traditional Political System of the Didayi Tribe in Malkangiri District has been a journey of learning, reflection and commitment to my roots. Through this work, I hope to contribute meaningfully to the development of my community, preserve our indigenous knowledge systems and create greater awareness about the cultural and political heritage of the Didayi people.

I owe a special debt of gratitude to Prof. Achyuta Samanta Sir, the visionary founder of KISS, whose tireless efforts have transformed the lives of countless tribal students like me. His mission to empower tribal communities through education has been a constant source of inspiration. Whatever I have achieved today is possible because of the opportunities, guidance and values I received at KISS, which truly embodies the spirit of education with humanity.
