My Artistic Journey: From a Village Student to a Devotee of Lord Jagannath through Art

When I got admitted to Class 3 at UGME School in Kudumulugumma, there was no hostel facility available for me. As a result, I had to travel from my home to school and back every day. My father went to Kudumulugumma to find a tutor for me and arranged for tuition classes. However, since I couldn’t stay there, he spoke to the Headmaster of my school and asked if I could stay with one of our relatives who was already working there. I continued my studies at that school but never ate the hostel food provided there. Every day after school at around 4 PM, I would ride my bicycle home, eat there, attend tuition classes and return to the hostel with my dinner packed in a tiffin carrier. I used to eat my homemade food sitting with the hostel kids, while they ate the food served to them.

I lived like that for three years.

When I was in Class 5, I used to take a mat with me every day to sit for tuition under Maheswara Maharana Sir. One day, I forgot to bring my mat and asked my classmate Tulabati Khila if I could sit on hers. She refused. So, I took her mat and wrote "Maharana Sir" beautifully in English on it. When Sir arrived and saw the beautifully written name, he asked everyone who had done it. Everyone said it was me Jyotiranjan Gudia. That day, Sir told me, “I will bring you some paints and you will write inspiring quotes in beautiful handwriting on every wall of the school.” From that day, Sir developed a deep fondness for me. Along with writing moral quotes on the school walls, he also encouraged me to start painting. However, the wife of the Headmaster would send me every day to graze their cow. Because of this, I started missing important lessons like Mathematics and Science. While others were progressing in class, I was left behind, spending my time grazing cattle instead of learning. One day I realized that this was hindering my education. I gathered the courage and politely told them I wouldn't be able to do those tasks anymore. As a result, they asked me to leave the hostel.

So once again, I started commuting from home to school by bicycle. Maharana Sir noticed all of this. Impressed by my courage and passion for art, he asked me to stay with him. I lived with him for three years. He not only taught me but also cooked food for both of us. When I completed Class 7, Sir asked me to continue living with him until I finished Class 10. I agreed. After passing my 10th-grade exams, I got admitted to KISS, Bhubaneswar, for my +2 education. When I completed my +3 studies and returned home, I created a painting of Lord Jagannath and gifted it to Sir as a token of my gratitude.

The painting shown in the images is of the famous Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, with the divine trio Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra vividly depicted in the foreground. The rich colors and intricate detailing in the artwork reflect the deep devotion and artistic growth I have experienced over the years. I signed the artwork under the name Jyoti Art Kiss, a tribute to my time at KISS and the journey that began in a small village school.

His leadership and compassion have brought opportunities to countless tribal children who otherwise would not have access to education.

A visiting artist from Madhya Pradesh, well-known for his work in Madhubani painting, came to KISS along with his mother to share their traditional art form with tribal students. This interaction became an unforgettable experience for both the visiting artist and the students, especially for one young artist, Jyotiranjan Gudia, who made a lasting impression through his gift of art. During their stay at KISS, the Madhya Pradesh artist and his mother conducted workshops on Madhubani painting. Students learned the intricate techniques, motifs and symbolic patterns that make Madhubani one of India’s most celebrated folk-art traditions. The sessions were lively, educational and inspiring, allowing tribal students of Odisha to appreciate the depth of another region’s culture. The visiting artists not only shared their skills but also created a bridge of understanding between two tribal art heritages.

        In return, the students of KISS, including Jyotiranjan Gudia, shared their own indigenous artistic tradition: Soura painting. Originating from the Soura tribe of Odisha, this art form is known for its symbolic depictions of life, rituals and community stories. The exchange was truly a two-way learning experience, where the artists of Madhya Pradesh learned about Odisha’s cultural expressions while the KISS students discovered new techniques and traditions from another part of India.

As the visiting artist prepared to leave Odisha, he asked Jyotiranjan Gudia what he could carry with him as a memory that would last a lifetime. Jyotiranjan, who had already demonstrated his artistic skill, responded not with words but with action. The exchange of Madhubani and Soura painting between the artist from Madhya Pradesh and the tribal students of Odisha stands as a beautiful example of India’s cultural diversity. It illustrates how traditional art forms, though rooted in different soils, share the same spirit of storytelling, identity and celebration of life. Both art traditions, when shared, became richer and more meaningful. Ultimately, the portrait presented by Jyotiranjan Gudia is not just an artwork it is a reminder of a cultural friendship that took shape at KISS. It symbolizes how art can create bonds between people of different regions, preserve memories of shared learning and strengthen India’s tribal heritage. Displaying the portrait during Bal’s death anniversary at KISS in front of 25,000 tribal students gave the artwork a living context, connecting young learners with the values embodied by Bal. Jyotiranjan Gudia himself is not only an artist but also a scholar deeply committed to research on tribal culture and governance. His journey reflects a balance between creativity and academic pursuit. At KISS, he found a nurturing environment where his talents could grow and where he could use art as a bridge between memory and identity. His decision to honor a towering intellectual figure like Pradyumna Bal through art demonstrates his awareness of history, society and the role of cultural icons in shaping collective consciousness.

It is a bridge between generations, a visual narrative of Odisha’s intellectual heritage and a testimony to the power of art in education and remembrance. Through this portrait, Jyotiranjan Gudia honored a great son of Odisha while also inspiring young tribal students to look toward role models who embody courage, intellect and service to society. His work stands as proof that art, when nurtured in the right environment, can transcend boundaries of time and create a lasting cultural impact.

From Workshop to Ph.D.: Jyotiranjan Gudia’s Research Path at KISS

In 2017, when I was in my final year of +3, KISS had not yet been recognized as a university. At that time, the new administrative building on the KISS campus had been constructed but was not yet inaugurated. During this period, a workshop was organized where I presented an article on the socio-cultural aspects of the Didayi tribe, written on a drawing sheet. In the picture, I am receiving a certificate of appreciation for my presentation. The certificate was handed over by the then Deputy Registrar, Promod Patra Sir, who was also the first Research Director of KISS and former Principal. His encouragement and words of appreciation greatly motivated me in my academic journey. That workshop was a memorable moment for me, as it was one of my earliest opportunities to present my research interests in front of respected academicians. The appreciation I received there boosted my confidence and strengthened my determination to pursue research on tribal communities, which later became the central focus of my Ph.D. work.

Jyotiranjan Gudia, a Ph.D. scholar at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar, has always balanced academic dedication with personal discipline. His choice to run and keep himself active highlights his awareness of fitness and mental clarity, both of which are crucial in a demanding academic journey. Running is not just physical exercise but also a way to release stress, build stamina and gain focus, something essential for a researcher like him who spends long hours in study and fieldwork. The setting of this photo Patharagadia new road is significant in itself. Patharagadia, an area known for its open spaces and developing roads, provides a perfect spot for running and outdoor activities. For Jyotiranjan, this was not just a place for physical exercise but also for personal reflection, away from the daily routines of research and study.
